The SMARTIE project aims to develop a harmonized European approach to AI in education by developing accessible educational materials and inclusive teaching methods using generative AI.
To realise this objective, the project is developing eight national strategies based on research into the AI and higher education landscapes of its partner countries: Austria, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Spain. Each strategy focuses on specific policies, regulations, institutional developments, and national priorities of each country and proposes strategic actions for the responsible integration of AI into higher education.
The national strategies are intended to support future approaches to inform and shape future approaches to AI integration and the broader digitalisation of education in the participating countries.
As part of this work, ACEEU was responsible for developing the national strategy for Germany. ACEEU carried out an in-depth desk review of federal and state-level policies, institutional initiatives, regulatory frameworks, and practical examples of how higher education institutions in Germany are responding to the growing use of AI in teaching, learning, assessment, and course development.
Building on the national research and wider European developments, a European Strategy for the Integration of AI in Higher Education will be developed. The European strategy will identify actions that universities and other relevant stakeholders across Europe can take to support the responsible and effective use of AI in higher education.
